GREEN DESIGN AND SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE

COMPREHENSIVE STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION FOR MALAPASCUA

Dr. hab. Barbara Widera

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the paper is to set a framework for sustainable development and environmental strategy for the small island of Malapascua (Republic of the Philippines). The action aims to improve the living conditions as well as the comfort and satisfaction of the island's inhabitants, in a manner possible to implement in modest economic conditions without threatening the natural environment. The main elements of the strategy are:
• focus on harmonious and sustainable spatial development,
• well-balanced architectural design combining lessons from vernacular structures with up-to-date knowledge about bioclimatic building,
• adequate selection of materials, taking into account limited resources and based on the circular economy model,
• increased energy efficiency in buildings,
• fostering the use of energy from renewable sources,
• encouraging the use of natural ventilation and daylighting,
• rainwater harvesting and purification,
• sustainable resource management,
• enhancing the blue economy,
• community involvement and increasing the importance of local culture,
• promotion of sustainable tourism as the main source of income.
The paper addresses some of the most acute issues faced by the inhabitants of the island and the suggestions on how to improve the situation in a comprehensive manner are presented in conclusions.
